Case Study Transformation Planning - IT-Transformation von Senacor
Building Strategically:

4 divisional executive managers, 14 projects and 25 systems – one transformation plan

Case Study:

Modernisation of the IT landscape for growth and product innovation in logistics

The client is a leading global logistics corporation that handles the following:

  • Increasing goods traffic through e-commerce
  • Strategic reorganisation of a business segment in the corporation
  • New products for new client needs
  • Increasing production capacities
  • Reorganisation of professional sides and IT

The ageing IT landscape can no longer meet the requirements of product innovations and business growth. The newly responsible CIO contracts an IT transformation.

Strategic partner for the client to plan and manage the IT transformation

  • Scaling and flexible design for transport data management
  • End-to-end process integration for order management
  • Flexible connection of logistics partners
  • Consolidation of data warehouses
  • etc.

Analysis of existing IT landscape for strengths and weaknesses related to new business requirements

  • Design of an IT target architecture and IT development plan with a migration path, investment plan, benefit plan, capacity plan, etc.
  • Preparation of programme organisation and corresponding processes for the implementation
  • Definition of a project portfolio and support for IT service-provider selection to implement it
  • Management and support of business IT task forces for the initiation of individual projects:
    • Analysis and rough concept of business functions/processes
    • Analysis and rough concept of IT applications
    • Technology selection and piloting
  • Control of the implementation as co-programme manager for the client and via a programme management and IT architecture office
  • Implementation of selected system integration projects
  • Strong fragmentation and many redundancies in the functionality and data of the IT landscape (hundreds of interfaces)
  • Resulting in high dependencies between the IT applications and/or IT projects

Draft of an overarching professional development plan with a modular structure

  • adhering to the principles of a domain- and service-oriented architecture
  • with the aid of Senacor professional structural patterns (so-called business IT design shapes)

Use of the development plan

  • for the design of an integration layer that cleanly separates inefficiently intertwined parts of the IT landscape
  • and for the consistent management of the IT transformation in terms of content along the greatest possible modular ( i.e. independent) implementation areas with their own professional benefits

EMPLOYEE roles in the project

  • A special challenge was to maintain an overview and manage the connections between many projects. The conviction of professional stakeholders that were more interested in short-term optimisation was also important.“
    — Kathleen Biedermann in the role of Business IT Consultant (Programme Management Office)

    My responsibilities in the project

    • Co-development of the transformation strategy and contents
    • Drafting of programme structures and processes
    • Overarching programme planning and content management for transformation
    • Programme controlling and reporting
  • I found it particularly challenging to be used as a developer in a conceptual project in order to contribute my experiences from the development point of view. It was especially exciting that this resulted in concrete development projects that I had actively helped to design and implement.“
    — Philipp Koch in the role of Developer (System Analysis and Integration)

    My responsibilities in the project

    • Analysis of existing IT landscape for weaknesses and improvement potential
    • Support for the target conception with a focus on standardised system integration for the uniformity of interfaces
    • Development of a B2B integration gateway for the connection of small and mid-sized partners
